About Chorus at BHS

At the bottom of this page is information about the many opportunities for vocalists at Brookline High School. For additional information about the choirs at Brookline High School, please see the Brookline High School choirs Frequently Asked Questions page.

Chorus Auditions

Auditions for both A cappella Choir (required for rising 9th graders only) and Camerata (all students) for the 2021-2022 school year will be held after school via Zoom on February 23-25, 2021. The audition will consist of a pre-recorded song of your choice that is submitted prior to the audition, followed by a live virtual audition. Additional details below.

Prior to the audition

  1. Sign up for an audition time here by choosing one of the available time slots. When you choose a time slot, you will receive an automated email that will include a Zoom link for your audition time.
  2. By Monday, February 22, make a video recording of yourself singing a song. This can be as simple as singing Happy Birthday. The main goal is to sing something that shows your voice at its best. You may sing a cappella or accompanied. If accompanied you may use a live player or a karaoke-style backing track. Be sure your voice can be heard clearly. Then upload your video to YouTube as an unlisted video.
  3. Complete this Google Form.

During the audition

The audition will consist of the following:

  • Singing scales to determine vocal range/voice part
  • Pitch memory assessment (director plays a series of notes, auditionee sings them back)
  • Sight-singing of rhythm patterns
  • Sight-singing of a melody
  • After the audition Dr. Driscoll may ask you to complete an online quiz of musical terms and musical notation.

Please be sure to warm up your voice before your audition.

Chorus Pianist/Accompanist Auditions

Students who are strong pianists are encouraged to audition to accompany Concert Choir and/or Camerata. Because not all music the choirs perform is accompanied, student accompanists typically sing in the choir when not playing; singing solo is not required.

Auditions for chorus accompanists for the 2021-2022 school year will be held after school via Zoom on February 23-25, 2021. Students must sign up for a specific 10-minute audition time here. Please email Dr. Driscoll with any questions at michael_driscoll@psbma.org.

The audition for the 2021-2022 school year will consist of two parts:

Prior to the audition

  1. Sign up for an audition time here by choosing one of the available time slots. When you choose a time slot, you will receive an automated email that will include a Zoom link for your audition time.
  2. By Monday, February 22, make a video recording of yourself playing two pieces of contrasting styles and tempi that demonstrate your strengths as a pianist. Each piece should be no longer than 2-3 minutes in duration. Upload your videos as a single file to YouTube as an unlisted video.
  3. Complete this Google Form.

During the audition

The audition will consist of the following:

  • Sight-singing of rhythm patterns
  • Sight-singing of a melody
  • Sight-reading of a short piece for piano
  • After the audition Dr. Driscoll may ask you to complete an online quiz of musical terms and musical notation.

Vocal Opportunities at Brookline High School

The choral/vocal program at Brookline High School offers students many opportunities to sing, perform, and become independent, musically literate individuals. There are opportunities to participate in choral/vocal music for students with no previous experience as well as for students with significant experience.

Concert Choir

Concert Choir is open to anyone at BHS. No audition is required. If you want to take this class, all you need to do is request it when you fill out your elective course requests.

A cappella Choir

A cappella Choir is open to students in grades 10–12 without an audition. Incoming 9th grade students who are more advanced singers and readers may audition to be considered for A cappella Choir. See below for audition information.

Camerata Choir

Camerata is open to students in grades 9–12 by audition. Camerata meets Wednesday evenings and during Z-block (before school) on Tuesdays and Fridays. Students in Camerata also need to take two years of one of the other faculty-directed ensembles (Concert Choir or A cappella Choir). Admittance into Camerata is quite competitive. Spaces usually go to students whose voices have had time to mature and who have had more experience sight-singing. The best preparation for entry into Camerata is to take a year of BHS Concert Choir. See below for audition information.

Student-Directed Vocal Ensembles

We also have three student-directed vocal ensembles at BHS (Perfect Pitch, Note-a-fy, Testostatones, and Glee Club), which hold auditions in May and June. Members of the student-directed a cappella groups need to take at least a year of Concert Choir. This requirement helps ensure that members have the skills needed to be effective members of the student-directed a cappella ensemble.
